Osteoporosis: The Silent Killer

A systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, osteoporosis, or low bone mineral density currently affects more than 28 million Americans and an even greater number of Europeans. The disease is especially prevalent among women of Northern European descent, although all ethnic groups and sexes are affected. Osteoporosis leads to bone fractures that may result in infection and death. It is estimated in the United States alone that over $14 billion in medical costs are directly related to treating osteoporosis. The loss in human and economic terms is incalculable, often leading to incapacitation and confinement in a nursing home for many sufferers.

Prevention Osteoporosis can be prevented and controlled by proper diet, exercise and the regular consumption of calcium supplements. In women, it has been shown that the use of natural progesterone cream will not only prevent osteoporosis in women but will restore bone loss. However, progesterone is ineffective for men and many women may want additional protection, especially if their diet, life style and genetic background make the development of osteoporosis likely.

How Ipriflavone Works Ipriflavone is rapidly absorbed through the small intestine, particularly when taken with food, and then is metabolized by cells, primarily in the liver. The ingredient is then excreted in the urine in less than 10 hours. When compared with Calcitonin, one of the most popularly prescribed prescription drugs, ipriflavone proved a greater ability to inhibit the formation osteoclasts (old bone cells) and bone resorption, while simultaneously stimulating the formation of osteoblasts, or new bone cells. Unlike the prescription drug, there are no side effects.
